Olive Python in the City Square

Hi V ... Back on 28 July 2012 The Lord Mayor Hosted a Welcome to International Students who live and study in Melbourne's Central City. The event was in the City Square. Among the activities were "Roaming Reptiles" an introduction to Australian Wildlife and here is one of the exhibits an Olive Python.  It was in a plastic tub without a lid and I was assured it was harmless.  I took this photo with the lens approximately 20 cm from its head.    A web site called "Snake Ranch" advise that they can reach up to four metres in length and sometimes have a "borderline psychopathic" feeding response.  It also suggests that once the python realises that the keeper is not on the menu, it can be quite amenable to handling and makes an inquisitive and well adjusted pet.  Think I'll stick with my dog.  Cheers J.  PS They are not native to Melbourne and are found in Northern Australia.

  1. Wow, what an event. I never heard of this event at all. It would be excellent to see the snake myself with my own naked eyes.

    Good shot, Joe!

  7. Yes, you will have to remind you to tell you the story of "a snake in our garage" which turned out to require 6 police, one wielding a plastic baseball bat. It was a 13 foot python with a lump. Thankfully, I was out of town and my husband handled the crisis. Great shot and I am glad that you got it unscathed!
