MELBOURNE - THE LARGEST MOST SOUTHERLY CITY ON THE GLOBE?

... and here we are; back in the antipodes.  I looked at a latitude map of the world the other day and there's not many large cities this far south where "large" is measured by population.  Melbourne with a population of around 4.25m is on a latitude of 37.8136 degrees south. We are a few degrees further south and have a larger population than Capetown South Africa and Buenos Aires in South America.  Of course Tasmania on the other side of Bass Strait is further south but in 2011 it only had around 512,000 on the whole island. Most of New Zealand across the Tasman Sea is further south than Melbourne but its cities are not as large. I stand to be corrected but it seems that Melbourne is the largest most southerly city on the globe. Who knew? Ciao J&J.  PS. It's a long way from Santorini.

  1. Oh yes -it is a long way from Santorirni! Melbourne looks great and I had no idea that it is such a big city. The whole population of Switzerland comes to around 8m! Small country with a sometimes very small mind.
    Have a great week.
