Hi V ... to my surprise during a visit to Brighton Cemetery came by the resting place of Joseph Theodore Leslie Taylor aka "Squizzy Taylor". Squizzy was one of Melbourne's fearsome criminals of the 1920's. His crimes raged from pick pocketing, assault and shop breaking to armed robbery and murder. He died from a gunshot would allegedly from a rival gangster in 1927. |
Fascinating find Joe.
ReplyDeleteThere's definitely a story there Joe, do you think his daughter dying so young made him go off the rails and a bit mental!
ReplyDeleteWow, had no idea he was interred there, Joe...
ReplyDeleteJoe Joe Joe ... do me a favour and link this to my Taphophile Tragics for next Tuesday. It is spot on the type of thing I am looking for. Thanks for considering.
ReplyDeleteIf I'd have stumbled on that I would have had no idea he was Squizzy Taylor.
ReplyDeleteWell how interesting...he was quite the crook, did he die in jail I wonder?
ReplyDeleteFascinating.
ReplyDeleteYeh! I saw this other day and I'm glad you added it to taphophiles.

it looks as if there is a lot of rust on this headstone.
ReplyDeleteA child but no wife willing to claim him as husband.
ReplyDeleteOhh ... I had not noted the missing wifie ... sad about the child. And ST was under 40 ... not true that only the good die young.
ReplyDeleteIf you have more, Joe, then link one up each Tuesday if you can remember. They can be old posts, however, I would appreciate your going into the old post and adding a link to Taphophile Tragics, please. Ever the marketing guru ... *Chortle* .. or *chorkle* ... whichever it be.
How odd that this names only his daughter and himself. Perhaps it is good that his nickname was not included?
ReplyDeleteoh, I should have read the other comments first - I see I was not the only one who noted that omission.
