Thomas Serrell - 12 January 1891

Hi V ... Thomas Serrell aged 43 was laid to rest in Boroondara General Cemetery on 12 January 1891.  His grave is topped with a sculpture of a greyhound.  I wonder if it was his faithful pet.  Cheers J. Contributed to Taphophile Tragics.

  1. Maybe he trained the dogs for racing? It's a fine memorial anyway.

  2. This man had a 4 legged, faithful friend perhaps! Instantly I thought of the story of Greyfriar's Bobby!

  5. As in life ... So in death. Staying close by his master. It's beautiful.

  6. I think it is very unusual for a grave from 1891 to have a dog on it, I do like it very much though. And the sculpture seems to be in a good condition too. Thanks for sharing!

    1. It is unusual isn't it. It was the only one I have ever seen containing a dog.

  7. Oops, when I saw the thumbnail I wondered why he had a pig on his grave. A greyhound makes so much more sense.

  11. Yes, I bet he was a grey hound trainer, probably had pigeons, too. The Bill Lawre(Lawrie??) of his era.

The carving is wonderful with such a poignant face. The dried flowers really add to the image, Joe.
